For most of us, one of the strongest characteristics of a dental office has been the loud whirl of the dental drill. Traditional handpieces work on high pressure air lines that push an air turbine in the dental drill. This deafening noise has been unavoidable until recently.
Electric motors have been miniaturized to the point that they have revolutionized dental handpiece design. The electric handpiece is so quiet that now the loudest noise in the dental operatory is the suction device. The electric handpiece provides more control for the dentist and greater torque so that tooth preparation procedures can be completed more rapidly.
