Laser Dentistry
The dental diode laser is designed for the mouth’s delicate tissues. With their focused light energy soft tissue lasers provide control and predictability surpassing traditional scalpel gum recontouring surgery with the added benefit of minimal post-operative discomfort, swelling and accelerated healing times.
A fiber the size of a fishing line can be passed over the soft tissue to shape the gums to the desired contours. The advantage of the laser over previously used electrosurgery is that there is very little tissue damage. The gum tissues can be laser sculpted often with only a topical anesthetic (no needles) and the tissues heal very quickly with little discomfort. Further, the laser can be used for many soft tissue procedures in place of a scalpel which nearly eliminates bleeding or the need for stitches.
There are limitations of what can be achieved with the use of lasers. Dental lasers are not a substitute for treatment of periodontal disease. Patients with advanced periodontal disease, gum recession and missing gum tissue should see a Periodontist (gum treatment specialist) for a complete evaluation.
